Mid-Century Modern on Avenue m

Project Location: Saskatoon, SK

In 2018 I met my client on Ave M and we quickly hit it off. It is always so validating to meet people who have the same interests as you and as a result you just feel like you understand what they want on a deeper level. My client was previously a forest ranger up in the northern boreal forest of our province and she was forever tied to raw backcountry adventure. She is an avid camper, going on challenging trips in remote places. I could tell that these trips made her feel vibrantly alive. She loves birding and was looking to bring the feeling of her lifestyle into her yard. She also loves Mid-Century Modern as an aesthetic so that needed to be blended into the space as well.

My client had many beautiful stones and antler sheds she had collected in her travels. They easily found homes in the landscape we built for her. The deck became the focal piece with a Mid-Century vibe that our builder really nailed. I cannot express how happy I felt this summer when I stepped back into this yard and saw the Honeysuckle vine spilling over the pergola on the deck.

We chose native plants like Anise Hyssop, yarrow and high bush cranberries, as well as non-natives like Russian Sage, Catmint, and Sour Cherries. They have moved throughout the yard as native plants tend to do, each spot they turn up in is bursting with colour.

Overtime, the space has changed, sod has been added for her pup and the shrubs have begun to hit their stride. I’m looking forward to being back in this yard after 3 years to start the next phase of the design!
