I had the personal pleasure of working with Manolis of Manos restaurant in Saskatoon to plant their patio garden. Manos restaurant has served Saskatoon for decades with superb food, service and atmosphere. Their newly renovated space is stylish and their extended patio is a great spot for lunch or cocktails!

Manolis developed the patio garden with deep raised beds that are insulated with 2” styrofoam insulation. When building raised beds in our climate you can either aim to replant annuals each summer or attempt to establish perennials. With an insulated raised bed the temperature of the soil will hopefully lower slower and protect perennial plants roots from freezing too quickly. With proper insulation you can carry perennials and shrubs through the winter in a raised planter.

For the Manos patio we selected a variety of perennials like Catmint, Sedum, Bugleweed and Sempervarium. We used annuals such as Mangaves, Tradescantia and Swedish ivy to provide lush tropical foliage. Grape vines will eventually work their way up the built in trellis and create a cozy atmosphere.
